A little history of the united states - James West - Scott Goggins

Image
This book I read out of insecurity for not knowing much about history. Honestly I got what I wanted out of it but man do I wish I had a better memory. If I could retain everything that I read in this book in terms of dates and names then I'd be in such a good spot. O well. It honestly was everything I wanted. I wanted a timeline from conception to current and this delivered. It also threw in some interesting tidbits to entertain the reader such as nickelodeon (the kids channel) originated form movie tickets being a nickel. Basically "nickel theater". So with stuff like that sprinkled in it was cool. I learned a lot and it also made me realize that history is riddled with chaos. People might say 'this is the worst time to be born' but then you could just say well you didn't live through the depression. So no matter what there are always going to be issues. No one could ever agree, all the way back to the founding fathers. Even then they compromised on stuff. ...

Endure - Alex Hutchinson - Scott Goggins

This was a book club recommendation from Rachel. It's an interesting book and had to have taken him forever to write it. Essentially it's two parallels happening at the same time. One story is how he is working with and participating in Nike's sub 2 hour marathon and the other is chapter after chapter about the science behind what's holding us back from performing and what we can do to get the last 1%. I think this book is less about sports and more about how our bodies function when handling intensity. An example would be if I can do a boring task for 3 hours a day would that make me able to push harder in a marathon. That kind of stuff. Overall it was interesting to read about and it was also interesting to see how the science progressed from the old days to now. It seems like everyone was smarter back in the day and people kind of just hopped into the field. A lot of the back in the day scientist were athletes that later in life worked in a lab then they'd come...

The Women - Kristin Hannah - 2024

Image
I read this one. It is not that long. I hate fiction but I love Kristin Hannah so I plan to read all of her stuff. As in the other books I have read recently, women are treated terribly in this one too. Perhaps men do not understand the difficulties women face in life. The language is funny because the story takes place in the 60s and 70s. Apparently the best way to get women is to say “hey foxy lady can I buy you a drink?” Jajajaja I will have to try this line.  So yeah if you like fiction worth reading, if not then skip. Peace. And mom if you read the blog, this is a good book for you to read. It is your style.  And this book is pretty new so I was happy to finally get it. I was on the waitlist for a long time. Go Kristin Hannah. I need to read her other books next. I know one is called nightingale.  Ah yes, compared to the four winds (the first book I read by her), I would say that the four winds is better than this one. I think the story is better in the four w...

Moneyball - Michael Lewis - 2003

First I will say something dumb. So Under the Banner of Heaven was written by Jon Krakauer. Michael Lewis wrote this one. However the audio on both was done by the same person jajajaja whose name is Scott Brick. So shout out to Scott Brick. He has a nice deep sturdy reading voice.  First let me say I have read a lot of better books than this one that have not been turned into movies starring Brad Pitt. The book is good and it teaches a very critical lesson: there is a very good chance that everyone is missing something right now or you are missing something right now in your own life that you could solve through deep deep thought on the subject. This is essentially what the Oakland As did. They used advanced statistics (sabermetrics) and Harvard graduates to create a playoff baseball team with very little money. With the data, they were able to identify really really good players that other teams consistently overlooked. The book does not say this but this all happened ...

Jon Krakauer - Under the Banner of Heaven - 2003

First of all I'm on fire so I pat myself on the back. I am writing this review from mom and dad's house after the Christmas party. I will try to be brief on this one since I have been writing a lot lately. 1. The foundations of Mormonism/LDS is bs sorry not sorry. 2. If you meet a fundamentalist mormon get the f out of there. They could talk to God and God could tell them to attack you or worse. 3. I am not against polygamy in principle and I don't understand why it is a felony in most states in the US. If the polygamy is consensual and there is no assault, rape, or incest involved who cares. I mean "players" are praised for sleeping with a bunch of women. If the women are not brainwashed and are of age and everything is consensual then I have no problem with polygamy.  4. My observation is that it is hard to be a woman. I do not really mean anything by this other than that in the books I have been reading lately the woman/women are consistently tricked, brainwa...

Missoula - Jon Krakauer - 2015

Image
As noted in other reviews, I love Krakauer. He writes with the amount of detail that I aspire to write with.  I have a lot to say. This book is not too long. It is typical Krakauer length. I plan to read under the banner of heaven next by Krakauer. I think the Krakauer’s book about Pat Tillman was better than this one.  I truly believe this book should be required reading for any law student. For many parts of this book you are reading direct quotes/transcription from the trial/testimony. Actually it was too much at times which is why I think his other books are better.  On the issue of parents loving their children: I did not say this yet but this book basically explores the legal process surrounding two rape cases in Missoula Montana and discusses how rape is adjudicated in general. In one case the man confesses the rape to the police. However, his parents consistently back him in court. Now I am not saying you should be burned at the stake for raping someone, ho...

Make Right - Phillip Connor - Scott Bowling

A guy at the church I go to decided to write this book about his story in helping the less fortunate and how the scripture has given us the blueprint to do so. I went to the book reading also which honestly kind of helped. It was very similar to the book but gives you some background knowledge so I doubt I'll go to another book reading of anyone good but I'd recommend it if it's an option. The book reads slightly different than usual. At first I thought it was just going to tell his story but it almost reads as a persuasive book to do these things, at least the first half. The stories are interesting and Phillip seems to believe that he was put on this earth to give back. It makes me wonder why I don't have the same desire but I guess we are just different. He already had 4 biological children then decided to adopt 3 kids from Columbia I think. Kind of nuts. The ending had some pretty interesting parts. He gets very introspective about how he was able to deal with all...
