A Fortune of Sand - Ruta Sepetys - May 2026

 


I have a new keyboard so maybe I can type some more this time. For the last few I was using one finger. 

Ok, so this is the second Ruta Sepetys book I have read. I think this one was better because it related the story to the plight of women in the 1920s which I thought was a nice touch so, so far,

1. A Fortune of Sand

2. Out of the Easy

Now I will say something you do not want to hear. I think in some ways Ruta is the poor man’s (or woman’s) Kristin Hannah. Both are decent but I think Hannah’s plot construction, the way she relates her stories to history, and overall writing style are better. Probably the many readers of this blog will disagree and be outraged but I don’t care. I feel like Ruta has an awesome plot sometimes but then doesn’t finish the story well. I also feel like Ruta is trying to do too much at once sometimes. Maybe I am way wrong. I have been wrong before. 

Anyways, bisabuela told me to read another one of Ruta’s books. So I think I am going to go for three with Ruta and see which one is the best. It is nice to escape into easy fiction while I plan the South Park 5K.

Kudos to Scott for some really good reviews lately. I need to read the book by the divorced divorce lawyer lol. Dating doesn’t really exist anyways. It’s mostly like a unicorn or Sasquatch.

  A book I think most people should read. Not because they wrote this book in such a cool way that it stuck with me, its more so just the concept of boundaries. I thought about it before but never to the extent that this book portrays. It essentially is just a way to protect yourself and they give you permission to put yourself first which can be hard when your mom or grandmother are guilt tripping you. There are some interesting lines. So your parents raise you and as you are deciding what to do in life you decide you want to live in California while they are in Maryland. Your parents then say 'we provided for you all these years and have taken care of you and you are going to move to California and not let us see our grandchildren?'. Man’s Guide to Women - Gottman and Gottman - 2016

  I can’t say it is a good sign that I am reading this book. Jajajaj It is an embarrassment mostly but anyways knowledge is knowledge right? Jaja I can’t say this book was super helpful or matched my experience really. In some cases I disagree with the authors.  I think the main surprise of this book is the overall portrayal of women. I thought since it is 2026 women want to pay for the first date and aren’t emotional and don’t want to hold your hand and and don’t care if you hold the door for them and want to take control in sex and other relationship matters. This is what I get from watching tv and hearing about women wanting more equality. But this book basically says the opposite based on their studies: essentially that men have the power in the relationship and that women are fragile and need to be held and listened to. The Blind Side - Michael Lewis - 2006

  If this was basketball I would shoot a 3 cuz I need a heat check jajaja. Much better than moneyball. Not as good as the big short. He has another book called going infinite that is about crypto that I want to read but I cannot find it on Libby for some reason.  The main thing I learned from this book is that who you know really matters and that having money really matters. These people got Michael out of the hood by accident and used their vast wealth and connections to help him make it to the nfl. Without their help he could have easily ended up dead or flipping burgers.  This book was a bit mean at times. At one point it says Michael would likely never read a book for pleasure because he was not good at reading. lol  I honestly believe the Tuohy family helped him without any malicious motives (however there is definitely some doubt, read the whole review).
