Educated - Tara Westover - Scott Goggins
Have you ever watched a tv show where a character is just so freaking annoying and it makes you angry every time they mess up or do something wrong? While that is frustrating, I think it's a sign of a good show. This book in my opinion was very heavy. It's just so frustrating reading and wondering why they keep doing things to themselves but it's hard to understand from the outside looking in. It seems that the crux of the problem is the loyalty and submissiveness she has for her family and especially her dad. Honestly I get it. I tried to relate to my father and I would say that I value and oblige to his guidance or advice BUT that is only up to a certain point. I think you follow that until it starts causing you harm and that's when your father is no longer being your father. What makes it super hard for her is that in addition to her father, religion is tied heavily into this. Those two are very powerful because then you are saying to yourself 'am i wrong?'. My father is telling me I'm wrong and God is also telling me I'm wrong so how do I know "I'm right?". Then on top of that she doesn't know any better because she hasn't been exposed and she's just a child. The whole brother thing is just sad. Given the circumstance of it all I see how it occurred but man it's just so sad. The fact that she woke up is honestly a miracle.
The part I don't understand is how are these kids not dead or sick 24/7. They didn't believe in medicine. I got strep probably 10 times as child and I was told a virus needs antibiotics or it won't go away. Is that true? Also how the heck are they all so smart. She didn't start studying until like 13 or so and I was told that your brain is a sponge when you are younger and it gets increasingly more difficult to learn as you age. So how the heck was she able to get her doctorate? Sure you can work hard and stuff but she had to be gifted no? I also wish there were more photos of the family. I get he's an off the grid kind of dad but it's fun to read a book then look at the people that the story is about.
A really good book, thanks to Brian for the recommendation. I need a break though because it's so heavy and we keep reading book about children that get abused by their family. It'll wear on you lol.
Glad you read this! Nice review! I totally agree!
