Endurance - Alfred Lansing - Scott Goggins
Lets just get this out of the way, if you think you've ever been pushed to your limit. I'm here to tell you that you were probably at 30% capacity. They always say people aren't built the same anymore compared to back in the day and I don't want to believe it but this book makes a great case for that haha. This review needs to be consulted with a psychologist to have them confirm my thoughts but alas I'll do my best. There are two themes that stuck out to me 1: The ability to endure and 2: The ability to still be happy/content. Throughout the book these men are possibly in the worst shape/conditions you could describe and yet through it all they kept pushing, kept holding out hope and kept their heads together. For one, facing death is quite the motivator but also I think being in a group and pulling your own weight is another. You ultimately have a unit of men who are relying on you to pull your weight and if you don't then you will lose their respect. I'd like to think military teams are also strong because of this bond. In terms of how they kept positive, they relied on one another to pass the time, always held out hope and REALLY enjoyed having a duty to do that day. The worst seemed when there was nothing to do but sit in a tent. As long as you stay busy it seemed things were good.
Even though I'm reading the book and hearing all these accounts I'm assuming they lived but I found myself wondering how the hell were they going to get out of this. The book kept you very captivated, I found my self itching to read this when I was doing other tasks which is a good sign. I was cheering for them and also had a sigh of relief when they made it. I hope one day when AI is bonkers I can ask it to create a movie based off of this book since it would be so cool. I see this book recommended a lot and I agree with it's popularity.
Everyone should read it and realize they are soft and live a soft life.
