Nikki Sixx - Heroin Diaries

If you've ever heard anyone say 'sex, drugs and rock n roll' well that applies perfectly with this book. Nikki Sixx the lead singer of Motley Crue takes us on his journey as he battles addiction, managing the band, depression and life after a tough upbringing. This book begins with him already established as an artist so you don't get much history on the band but as you go through the book you learn everything you need to know about them and more. Similar to Scar Tissue the grip that drugs have on these artists is mind boggling. Just when you start to think gosh i'm starting to get tired of hearing about drugs he throws in some insane story and suddenly you are wanting to hear more about this rollercoaster that he is on. Basically throughout the whole book I just kept asking myself: 'how is this man still alive'. The craziest part is even though he was fighting all of these battles the music he was making and the band was wildly successful so it almost makes you wonder how good could they have actually been. The book is essentially a read through of his journal but he pairs major journal entries with interviews of the members recalling that event so you get an additional insight into everyone's thoughts after reading what Nikki has written in the journal. The other really interesting part of this book is you get to hear him talk about all of the bands that if you are into rock music you'll know about. So you hear the unfiltered truth about how each of those members are from Nikkis point of view which is really cool to hear. For instance he talks about Slash a lot.

Another thing you might hear about books is how they allow you a glimpse into someone else's life which again fits perfectly for this book. You peek into the dark reality of a man who is on top of the world in the rock n roll community and get to follow his downward spiral. Brian and I have heard a lot of people recommend this book. In my opinion it's pretty good, I don't think it's amazing and an absolute must read but I would say you won't be let down.

  1. Brian I think you'd enjoy it. There are a lot of small crazy interactions and hearing the reactions of the band is funny.
