Uncle Tom's Cabin - Harriet Beecher Stowe - 1852

One of the oldest books I have read. This is a long book. This is historical fiction. Harriet Beecher Stowe was far ahead of her time. I commend her for her efforts in writing this book. Apparently she met President Lincoln.

This book is too long, but the point is well taken: slavery is evil, too many christians in the north (and south) are not doing enough to stop it. I am beginning to think that most authors write too much. They should look to (oddly enough) Britney Spears and tell what needs to be told and nothing more.

I say read the first 1000 pages (I read digitally so page numbers are totally relative here) and you will have understood Stowe's message. The second half of the book is only ok, however the ending is good.

page it!! in terms of being able to talk about it in a social, scholarly, or historical setting. If you want to read something for pure enjoyment, this is likely not the book for you due to the dark subject matter and at times boring plot.
