The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing - marie kondo (bbowling) - 2010

This book came out when I was in college. I can't believe I never heard of it or read it sooner. I should have. Anyways big shout out to scott and our book blog. I would never have found it otherwise.

I think this is a must read, especially for Americans. She is talking about excess in Japan. I bet if she came here the amount of garbage bags would triple. This is the first book I ever read that was originally written in Japanese. This is probably the first book I ever read by a Japanese author.

This is a life changing book. She shows you that through the mariekon method you can improve your confidence, your health, your future, you can let go of your past, and you can improve your decision making among other things.

I really really love that she greets her house each day she comes home (she is either nuts or a genius) and treats her belongings as if they are alive (this must be an eastern energy thing). I need to do this too. I really really love that you have to touch each item before you decide if it sparks joy. I really love that the criteria is "does this spark joy". She is not a textbook tidier by any means. She is a trial and error tidier and for this reason I believe her strategy will work. The vertical storage method and the slanted method for the closet are also genius.

This is one of the most unique books I have read in a long time. The only thing I did not like is that I felt she was writing to an audience of only women. That is bs. This book is for men too and she should know that. This is a short book and easy reading.

page it for sure! I highly recommend. I have just started her methods and already feel my confidence increasing. You should do it to. I have a lot more tidying to do.

Finally, there is a great line in the book where it says something like if you dress and look like garbage in your house, you will do the same in public. I agree with this and it reminded me of Drake's line from started from the bottom "i wear every single chain even when i'm in the house" jajajajaj

And my grandma just gave us all some of her old christmas ornaments for christmas. This is a cardinal sin for Kondo as you never should pass on your discarded items to family unless they really really want them (lol) oh well. I have done it too.

ok peace! this could be top ten. I will have to discuss with scott. But maybe it resonated with me more because my go to line is "appearance does not matter" jajajajaj.

  1. No this book is a legend. I'd agree with it being really good. It greatly impacted my life and I honestly should probably reread it. It's refreshing to hear it again in your review. I agree with passing on items. It's not my responsibility that one cannot give up their own junk. 'Everything should have a place' that's the best line.

  3. I'd be open to replacing meditations since we disagreed on that one.
