The Beat: Go-Go Music from Washington, D.C. - Kip Lornell (Author), Charles C. Stephenson Jr. (Author), Thomas Sayers Ellis (Photographer) - 2009
This is a short book that I checked out from the Arlington public library. This book is better than most especially if you are from D.C (i was working in D.C. at the time). It is probably something you have never read about (i never did) and gives you a real glimpse into D.C.'s music/culture. Apparently go-go songs never end. There was a really good all female group called Pleasure. While go-go has been popular in the district for years, it has never really made it nationally except for maybe in a few movies (I think school daze by spike lee is the main one). Go-go is a big part of the D.C. african american culture. When I spoke to my african american friends about this book, they recognized the groups and knew some of the history. This book was published in 09 and mentions some of the more recent groups too. I am not sure of the state of go-go as of writing (end 2023), but the history is rich.
page it for sure! very interesting book, almost all of the information will likely be new to you!(unless you grew up in dc)
