American Dirt - Jeanine Cummins

Yes lives up to the hype. Should be a movie. Yes read. It is fiction but based on things that almost certainly have happened (or some variation of them at least). Author graduated from Towson, go tigers! Very sad, very moving, very real. If you speak spanish (i do) it is even better. If you know anything about latin america (i do) it is even better. The author took a lot of flak for stealing mexican culture and not being latina enough. But who cares, the book is solid.

If you saw the movie el norte it is similar; also similar to the movie jaula de oro although I think the plot twists in american dirt are better overall. Well researched!!

Tells the story of a family (well part of a family, you will see) as they escape the cartel (la lechuza the word they taught me in school was buho but lechuza must be a mexican word for owl). They face many hardships and meet many others facing many hardships (perhaps worse than their own) on the way to estados unidos.

page it for sure!!! (especially if you are far right will open your eyes)
